Principal's Message

Bienvenidos a Alma Brewer Strawn Elementary!!
I am proud to be serving the students, parents, staff and the communities that  surround Alma Brewer Strawn Elementary.  My name is Dr. Benjamin Grijalva.  I joined ABS last school year and was honored to be the new principal.  I have learned and experienced the beautiful culture that has been created by the students, parents, and staff here at ABS! Educating children, supporting teachers and collaborating with parents has been my passion and aspiration.  In my experience, the work we do as public educators goes beyond the classroom work.  We collectively work to support individual students and their families.  Our work is vital to building and supporting the efforts of the communities we serve. Education starts at home, as my mother Aurora used to say.  Every parent or guardian entrusts us with their child(ren).  The trust each parent grants us is valuable, delicate and must be nurtured.  I enjoy collaborating with parents because we must listen to the aspirations they have for their children.  
 

About Dr. Grijalva
I was born and raised in El Paso, TX and Cd. Juarez, Mex. I was raised by a single mother with four other siblings. My native language is Spanish and I began to learn English when I was seven years old. I am married to my beautiful wife Yolanda who is also an elementary principal. I have five children, Anyssa, Benjamin, Isabel, Anabel, and Santiago. My teaching career started at Caver Kinder in 2006 as a Head Start Teacher. Bilingual education has been a big part of my personal life and professional career. I believe every child can and should have the opportunity to learn another language. I know this  because I have experienced the beauty and the benefits of knowing Spanish and English. Let's have a wonderful year!!

Estoy muy orgulloso de servir a los estudiantes, padres, el personal y comunidades que rodean la escuela Alma Brewer Strawn Elementary. Mi nombre es Dr. Benjamin Grijalva. Tengo el placer y honor de ser el nuevo director. ¡He convivido con los estudiantes, padres y maestras que han creado un ambiente hermoso aquí en ABS! Mi pasión y aspiración es educar a los niños, apoyar a los maestras y colaborar con padres. En mi experiencia, el trabajo que hacemos como educadores va más allá del trabajo en el aula. Trabajamos colectivamente para apoyar a estudiantes y sus familias. Nuestro trabajo es vital para construir y apoyar los esfuerzos de las comunidades a las que servimos. La educación empieza en casa, como decía mi madre Aurora.  Los padres o guardianes nos confían su(s) hija(s). La confianza que cada padre nos otorga es valiosa, delicada y debe desarrollarse. Es importante colaborar con padres porque debemos escuchar las aspiraciones que tienen para sus hijas.
 

Acerca del Dr. Grijalva 
Nací y crecí en El Paso, TX y Cd. Juárez, Méx. Fui criado por una madre soltera con mis tres hermanos y una hermana. Mi idioma nativo es el español y comencé a aprender inglés cuando tenía siete años. Estoy casado con mi hermosa esposa Yolanda, quien también es directora de primaria. Tengo cinco hijos, Anyssa, Benjamin, Isabel, Anabel y Santiago. Mi carrera docente comenzó en Caver Kinder en el 2006 como maestro de Head Start. La educación bilingüe ha sido una gran parte de mi vida personal y mi carrera profesional. Creo que todos los niños pueden y deben tener la oportunidad de aprender otro idioma. Lo sé porque hablo dos idiomas y sé de los beneficios de saber hablar español e inglés. ¡¡Que tengamos un año maravilloso !!
