Children's Day/Book Day Set for April 27

Alma B. Strawn Elementary will celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día) on Thursday, April 27 from 5:30-7:00.

Children's Day/Book Day, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día), is an observance held annually April 30 and a year-round commitment to connecting children with diverse books and programming opportunities.

Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found El día de los niños/El día de los libros.

The common goals of all Día programming are to:

Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries.

Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.

Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.

Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.
